South San Francisco
In August 2022, South San Francisco (SSF) recruited a diverse group of city staff, elected leaders, community stakeholder organization representatives and residents who were interested in the well-being of older residents to serve on SSF’s first ever Age Friendly Community (AFC) Task Force. With support and guidance from the Center for Age Friendly Excellence, they met regularly to discuss how their community could look at ways to improve the livability of their communities for their older adult residents and the process involved in planning, developing and launching a new and effective AFC initiative. This was done through conducting focus groups with a diverse range of older adult SSF residents to learn from them what they considered SSF’s livability challenges as well as strengths of their community. After an extensive review of this information and discussion among task force members, the task force chose several inaugural age friendly projects for the City of SSF to consider developing and implementing either directly or in collaboration with community stake holder organizations over the next two plus years.
Achieved AARP/World Health Organization (WHO) age-friendly community designation in June 2023.
